Petrino discusses plans for Razorbacks’ defense Published: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Bobby Petrino made his name in college football by building high-powered offenses, but Tuesday he also addressed the type of defense he plans to install at Arkansas. “What’s most important on defense starting out is that we play good principles of defense,” Petrino said. “We shed blocks, we run full speed to the ball, we tackle well and we get all 11 guys to the football. “ I think any time you can do that, and you understand that’s where some of your individual time needs to be spent, you’re going to be a better defensive football team. “ I also want to make sure that we stop the run and we can do that soundly, and then you have to be able to pressure the quarterback. A combination of being in your base defense and utilizing zone blitz, utilizing man blitz, is really what I’d like to do.”
Petrino has yet to name a defensive coach to his staff and isn’t expected to announce his complete staff until Jan. 3, after Arkansas plays Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. Petrino said he has not spoken about a job to Reggie Herring, Arkansas’ defensive coordinator the past three seasons who is acting as the Razorbacks ’ interim head coach for the bowl game. Petrino did not rule out the possibility of retaining some of Arkansas’ current coaches. Herring, Bobby Allen and Louis Campbell are working as defensive coaches with the Razorbacks and have yet to announce any future plans. “I just have to sit down and have the opportunity to listen to those guys,” Petrino said.
