Raise, extension given to Pelphrey Published: Saturday, August 02, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas Coach John Pelphrey is having his contract extended by a year to April of 2013 and receiving a $ 45, 000 raise, Athletic Director Jeff Long confirmed Friday. Pelphrey’s base salary will increase from $ 750, 000 to $ 795, 000. His contract continues to include incentive bonuses for winning SEC regular-season and tournament titles, reaching the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and Final Four and winning the national title and meeting academic goals. In Pelphrey’s first season with the Razorbacks, he led the basketball team to a 23-12 record, including an 86-72 victory over Indiana in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was Arkansas ’ first NCAA Tournament victory in nine years. Pelphrey was hired from South Alabama to be Arkansas’ coach in April 2007. Long was hired from Pittsburgh to be the Razorbacks’ athletic director in September 2007 and assumed official duties Jan. 1, 2008.
“While I wasn’t here when we hired John, certainly he’s the kind of coach that I would be looking at, and I’m thrilled that he’s here,” Long said. “I think the job that he did [last season ] was remarkable.” Long noted that Pelphrey took over a team with six seniors. “It can be difficult for a new coach to come in and develop a chemistry with so many seniors,” Long said. “I think John did a wonderful job managing that situation and leading those young men.” Pelphrey, 40, said he was appreciative of Long and the UA for the support. “As I’ve said before, I’m very humbled to be the Razorbacks ’ coach,” Pelphrey said. “We will continue to work hard and operate a program Razorback fans can be proud of.” Long said that when he was Eastern Kentucky’s athletic director, in the spring of 2000 he tried to get Pelphrey interested in being the school’s head coach. Pelphrey, a Florida assistant at the time, wasn’t interested in the job but supported former Kentucky teammate Travis Ford, who was hired by Long and now is Oklahoma State’s coach. Long said Pelphrey was “very genuine in his expression of appreciation” regarding his raise and contract extension. “I felt that and appreciated it myself, because sometimes people think that because you’re not the AD that hired him, that maybe that relationship is different,” Long said. “I told John very candidly, ‘I didn’t hire you, but you’re the kind of coach I would hire and I’m very pleased to be your AD.’” Pelphrey’s contract calls for him to be notified by Arkansas officials after the season if his agreement is being rolled over for the next year. Long said written documentation for Pelphrey’s raise and extension still need to be completed but will be done shortly. “I must admit I’m delayed a little bit in doing the paperwork, but we’ll get it done,” Long said. “It’s just a matter of getting everything together and producing the document.” More Stories From: BOB HOLT · SEC gets stars back from draft · Hogs' Balumbu falls short in final · NCAA OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS : All-American hog call · NCAA OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS : Hogs' title hopes take hit on Day 2 · NCAA OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS : Qualifying fervor Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
