Razorbacks report

Published: Thursday, August 14, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

Freshman’s knee injury not serious FAYETTEVILLE — The anxiety in Arkansas’ fall camp Wednesday afternoon hinged on the outcome of an magnetic resonance imaging on the knee of freshman tailback De’Anthony Curtis.

Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino delivered the good news for Razorbacks fans after the second of two practices.

“He’s got a knee sprain,” Petrino said. “The MRI results came back, and they’re good. It’s not a serious injury.” Curtis ran up the middle for 10 yards on the first play of controlled scrimmage work at Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Wednesday morning. He was tackled by safety Dallas Washington and others and was eventually taken off the field.

Petrino said UA trainer Joe Sheehan pronounced Curtis “already ahead of schedule.” “It’s anywhere up to two weeks,” Petrino said of Curtis’ timetable for a return. “He says he’ll definitely beat that.

“ It’s just a stretch, so you let it settle down for two or three days without doing any running. The thing they’re so encouraged with him is that’s where all his strength is, in his legs and lower body.” Curtis, the Razorbacks’ most highly rated freshman, was in the midst of a strong camp in which he was earning reps with the first team behind starter Michael Smith.

Fast start Arkansas’ starting offense posted another sizzling start during scrimmage work Wednesday morning. The starting offense, led by senior quarterback Casey Dick, posted 124 yards of total offense on its first eightplay sequence against mostly first-teamers on defense at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. “We still have a lot to work on and pick up,” sophomore guard DeMarcus Love said. “But it makes us feel good to know that the offense is working and guys are actually learning now instead of memorizing the offense. We’re learning defenses and we’re able to make plays.” The Razorbacks posted gains of more than 10 yards on five of those first eight plays.

After freshman De’Anthony Curtis ran up the middle for 10 yards on the first snap, Dick was “sacked” by Adrian Davis before he started to heat up.

Dick found Lucas Miller for 53 yards on a deep throw over the middle on play-action. Two plays later, Michael Smith ran 13 yards on a draw play, followed by Dennis Johnson’s 17-yard run over left guard.

On the last play of the sequence, Dick’s line bought him time and he found tight end D. J. Williams down the middle for a 25-yard gain. Robinson registers Senior Antwain Robinson turned in a series of disruptive plays from his defensive end slot in the scrimmage. Robinson scored a tackle for loss on Chip Gregory early, then “sacked” Nathan Dick about midway through the first half of the scrimmage. Robinson later sacked Alex Mortensen twice in three plays against the second offense. “I guess it’s one of the good scrimmages I’ve had,” Robinson said. “It’s not all about the sacks I had, it’s about trying to go out there and give more effort on each and every snap every time I get out there.” Robinson is tied with Andrew Davie and Lucas Miller for second place on the list of active career touchdown scorers for the Hogs. The three have three touchdowns apiece, while running back Michael Smith has six career scores.

Davie back Arkansas senior tight end Andrew Davie returned to practice Wednesday after sitting out since injuring his left shoulder in Monday morning’s workout.

“My shoulder is a little tender and I don’t have all the strength back in it, but I was able to get some plays in,” Davie said. “I was a little tentative at first, but got warmed up and it felt pretty good.” Davie was injured while working on the kickoff return team. “It was a full-speed collision from a guy running down the field from 60 yards away,” he said. “It was a little scary because stuff went numb and you started thinking, ‘Uhoh, what’s happening ?’ “ But I went to the sideline and got with the trainers, and they know what they’re doing. They said, ‘You’re going to be OK.’” Lampkin excited Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Brandon Lampkin practiced Wednesday, five days after he had been taken from the field by ambulance because of neck and back pain.

An examination showed Lampkin had a cervical spine sprain. He was released from the hospital Friday and attended Saturday’s practice.

Now he’s back on the field.

“It was really good to have him back, and he’s excited to be back,” defensive tackles coach Bobby Allen said. “We need to bring him along to see if he can help us this season. I think he can. “ Plus, the older guys are getting a lot of reps out here and starting to get a little worn down, so it’s good to have a fresh guy in there.” Personnel report Defensive end Jake Bequette hasn’t practiced in several days because of a concussion, but he has dressed out and watched from the sideline. Receiver Carlton Salters was able to practice Wednesday afternoon after missing the morning scrimmage. During the morning, he pulled a sled on the sideline, as did linebacker Ryan Powers. When the team practices twice, defensive tackle Ernest Mitchell goes in the morning and is off in the afternoon because he still is recovering from off-season knee surgery. Receiver Reggie Fish was headed toward a 69-yard touchdown on an end around during Wednesday’s scrimmage when he pulled up with a tweaked right hamstring. Fish stretched for a bit, then returned and caught a 12-yard out route in the second half of the scrimmage.

Bouncing one in Arkansas place-kicker Alex Tejada hit 6 of 7 fieldgoal attempts at the end of Wednesday morning’s scrimmage, including a 40-yarder that ricocheted like a bowling pin picking up a 7-10 spare. The kick hit the left upright, then the right one, then bounced over the crossbar. “I’ve never hit one quite like that,” Tejada said with a laugh. “That’s kind of a tough one to practice.” Tejada’s last kick was good from 50 yards.
