Vavra, Irwin quit UA football team

Published: Tuesday, February 05, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

Senior kickoff man Brian Vavra and fourth-year junior holder and reserve quarterback Clark Irwin are leaving the University of Arkansas football team and intend to move on after graduation in May.

Both walkons had another year of Razorback eligibility but had expressed intentions to explore career options after graduation.

Vavra, former kicker for Bentonville High School, has done all the Razorback kickoffs the past three seasons.

Irwin, of Little Rock Central, held for Alex Tejada’s placekicks in 2007.

Kevin Trainor, the Razorbacks’ sports information director and associate athletics director, confirmed Monday that Vavra and Irwin are no longer on the roster for offseason workouts and spring practice under new coach Bobby Petrino.

Petrino currently is full bore into recruiting.

Twenty-one prospects have made verbal commitments to sign when the national signing period begins Wednesday.

Verbal commitments are non-binding until the letter of intent is signed.
