Samuels, Bargiachi added to NCAA field

Published: Wednesday, March 12, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

Much to their delight, the Razorbacks and Lady Razorbacks learned Tuesday the field for the NCAA Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships meets the University of Arkansas hosts Friday and Saturday wasn't completed last Monday night by the NCAA after all.

Tuesday additions of provisional qualifiers to complete the field after some qualifiers scratched because of injuries or to compete in other events added Razorback J-Mee Samuels to the men's 60-meter dash and added Lady Razorback SEC Indoor 5, 000-meter champion Denise Bargiachi to the women's 5, 000-meter run.

Samuels already is a certified provisional qualifier in the 200-meter dash in Friday and Saturday's meet at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track.

Seeking No. 43 in their collection of national championships in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country, John McDonnell's men have qualified milers Andy McClary and Micky Cobrin, 5, 000 meters Tyler Hill, James Strang and Chris Barnicle, a distance medley relay of Daniel LaCava on the 1, 200, Chris Bilbrew on the 400, Alex McClary on the 800 and either Cobrin, Andy McClary or Michael Chinchar on the anchor mile.

A groin injury prevents freshman Duncan Phillips from being a DMR mile anchor if both Cobrin and Andy McClary are too preoccupied with the open mile.

In the field events, the Hogs have qualified SEC champion and SEC runnerup Nkosinza Balumbu and Daniel Quinn in the triple jump and SEC champion Alain Bailey in the long jump.

Adding Bargiachi brings the Lady Razorbacks up to a dozen competitors at the NCAA Women's Indoor Championships.

The Lady Razorbacks qualified three in the pole vault with Stephanie Irwin of Mount Ida, Katie Stripling of Jonesboro and freshman Tara Diebold; Dacia Barr, mile; Christine Kalmer, 3, 000-meter run; Bargiachi, 5, 000-meter run; Etienne Chaplin, pentathlon; Peter-Gaye Beckford, long jump; and the 4 x 400 relay of Courtenay Brown, Tominque Boatright, Shelise Williams and Springdale's Paige Farrell.
