UA swimmer smashes home country's record in Olympics

Published: Saturday, August 16, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

BEIJING, China - University of Arkansas swimmer Yi Ting Siow smashed the Malaysian national record in the 200 breaststroke at the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing, China, this week.

Siow, who is competing in her third Olympics, swam a 2: 27. 80 and missed the cut by five-tenths of a second.

Despite that, Siow won her heat while shattering her own national mark of 2: 29. 21. It was Siow's second swim after she posted a season-best 2: 17. 11 in the 200 IM earlier this week. She also holds the national record in that event with a 2: 16. 92.

Siow joined the University of Arkansas in January 2008 after transferring from Wisconsin.

The 2007 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, Siow is appearing in her third Olympics having also taken part in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.

Siow is the first Malaysian women's swimmer to compete in three consecutive Olympics. Siow was 15 when she made her Olympic debut in Sydney and set a national record finishing 27 th in the 200 m breaststroke.

Four years later in Athens, Siow was eliminated in the heats. Now, at 23, Siow has qualified in three events - the 200 and 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke.

Siow attended The Bolles School in Florida where she worked with current Razorback head coach Jeff Poppell. She attended college at the University of Wisconsin for two seasons and holds the school record for 200 breaststroke with a 2: 09. 95 and 200 IM at 1: 57. 60. She was the 2007 NCAA runner-up in the 200 breast.
