Hogs seek to shake off tired legs before Friday Published: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Sometimes the mind can't fathom the body's fatigue until there is finally pause to rest. The Razorbacks apparently fathomed all that in Sunday's off day. It marked their first day off since preseason practice began Aug. 4, including four two-adays, for 17 practices in 13 days. Fourth-year junior starting running back Michael Smith said Monday he never got out of bed Sunday. " I woke up one time a ro u n d 2 o'c l o c k, a n d thought I was late for a meeting, " Smith said. " After I realized I had nothing to do, I went back to sleep. " It's a n i g h t - a n d - d a y approach to preseason under new Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino versus the preceding 10 years under former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt.
" This camp has been THE most intensive camp that I have ever partaken in, " Smith said. Senior cornerback Jamar Love also missed seeing Sunday's sun. " I just slept all day, " senior cornerback Jamar Love said. " Caught up on my sleep for the past two weeks. " Well, not exactly caught up. The Hogs were still leg-weary resuming with a Monday afternoon practice, they and their coach said. " It's going to take a little bit more recover y, " Petr ino said after the Hogs in the morning reviewed film of last Saturday's scrimmage and then practiced in full pads Monday afternoon. " I thought they tried to practice hard. We'll get it back by Friday night, that's when we want to be full speed. " Friday night is their dress rehearsal at Reynolds Razorback Stadium for their Aug. 30 season opener against Western Illinois here. And that's when their legs really need converting from preseason training overwork to fresh game speed. " We are going to be all right, " Michael Smith said. " We just have got to grind this last week on out. I'm sure he'll get our legs back under us for Western Illinois. " The Hogs have their lone two-a-day of the week today, going in pads this morning and a briefer afternoon workout devoted to special teams. With Elton Ford among some Razorback true freshmen apparently involved in freshman orientation preceding next Monday's start to UA classes, junior Matt Harris was back running firstteam free safety Monday. Ford returned both an interception and a blocked punt for touchdowns last Saturday but Harris apparently played well, too in the closed to media scrimmage. " Ford is a big man who is real physical, a good tackler, " Petrino said. " But his youth in the passing game showed up a couple times. I was real happy with the way Matt Harris played. I thought he ran and tackled and played tough. I'm sure he led us in tackles in the secondary. " True freshmen Jelani Smith, getting his first taste of first-team time, and Khiry Battle split Monday's first-team Will linebacker chores as upperclassmen Elston Forte, the senior captain, and third-year sophomore Ryan Powers, continue rehabbing from preseason injuries. " They're doing as much as they can learning on the job, " Petrino said of Battle and Smith. " Hopefully we'll get Elston back toward the end of the week. I don't know what Powers'situation is, when he'll ever be back. " In the meantime, the rookies must do. " I tell you what, I don't mind having those two guys in there, " Petrino said. " They're eager, they'll hit, they'll run, they'll try to do everything you coach them to do, but they are young. So they did make some mistakes. At least they were full-speed mistakes. " Another rookie, true freshman Lavunce Askew of Camden Fairview, makes a bid at second-team defensive tackle while true freshman Jarius Wright of Warren not only is among the top three wide receivers but " the starting punt returner, " Petrino said. Wright's early ascension at receiver is no surprise, but Askew was maybe a redshirt possibility until both his readyto-play ability and the D-tackle need for depth dictated otherwise. " The youngster Lavunce Askew is doing a nice job, " Petrino said. " He's got to learn how to do everything right but he is very, very talented. He's got a knack for understanding blocking schemes and knowing how to rush the passer. I think you'll see him play a lot this year and hopefully get some sacks for us. " Marques Wade, the sophomore who closed spring drills as a first-team wide receiver but then was charged with a DWI in July, pleaded guilty to that DWI charge Monday at district court in Fayetteville. Wade continues to practice but won't play in the season's first two games, Petrino announced before preseason drills began.
